13 Reasons Why is a successful novel by Jay Asher. Its an AMAZING book and I think that everyone should read it as it will change the way we treat others and see the world; also the way the book is written which is interesting. The book is about a sixteen year old girl Hannah Baker. Hannah was bullied mentally and sexually and in the end, committed suicide. Before she committed suicide, she passed a shoe box filled with 7 tapes to 12 different people who made her decided to commit suicide. When Clay got the box, he listened to the tapes in one night. One night that changed his life, forever.
It all started when she first moved to her new school. Upon that, she made friends with Jessica and Alex in her freshman year. They always hung out at Monet's and chat after school. Hannah is a girl who never had her first kiss and that was her first reason. She had a crush on a boy, Justin, which is a year older than her. She wanted her first kiss so badly. Justin seems to have interest over Hannah. One night, they both met at the park. Hannah finally got her first kiss. And that was it. After the kiss, they went back home separately. The next day, there were tons of rumors saying things that weren't true. After that, they broke up.
The second reason was when Alex made a list. Just a useless list. The ones that you can find easily in the dustbin. Its actually nothing big. But the people made it so big that Hannah got herself killed. That list made Hannah look dumb.Everyone wanted to touch Hannah after that. Hannah and Alex weren't friends since then.
Third is Jessica. After Jessica read the list, she slapped Hannah and scarred her over her eyebrow by digging her nails into Hannah's forehead. People started gossiping about her again. Since then, they weren't friends. In fact, Hannah had lost her final friend.
The fourth is Tyler. Tyler is the photographer for the school yearbook. Hannah always kept her blinds up before going to bed so she could stare at the night sky before going to bed. But lately, Hannah felt insecure. Its like there's someone watching every move she makes. She then discovers that there were hidden cameras behind the tall shrubs by her window. Those cameras were obviously Tyler's. To catch Tyler in his act, also know as The Peeping Tom, Hannah got Courtney Crimson, the sweet flawless butterfly, to have a little sleepover. They did some things and heard the sound of camera clicks by the window. Quickly they snap open the blinds and saw Tyler's figure running away. Tyler ran away and took Hannah's safety with him, leaving her to feel trapped.
Fifth is Courtney, the sweet flawless butterfly. Well, not that flawless. After she and Hannah caught Tyler, she started a rumor saying things that was absolutely false about Hannah. Courtney then went to a party with Hannah. She was nice towards Hannah so that her sweet flawless image remains flawless. She never wanted to be Hannah's friend anyways.
Marcus came in sixth. After the "Valentine's Day perfect match quiz", Marcus asked Hannah out, thinking that Hannah would take it as a joke. Sadly, Hannah took it seriously and actually went to Rosie's diner for their 'date'. She waited for about thirty minutes and almost left when Marcus showed up. Marcus tried to take advantage of Hannah but she pushed him off. Marcus called her a tease loudly and left.
After that, Zach came up to Hannah. He tries to comfort Hannah but turns out he was dared by his friends to do so. Hannah ignored him and soon he got up and left. In school, Hannah joined a class, Peer Communications, where students can make special coloured bags and put notes, advice, and so in the persons bag. Zach was angry at Hannah so he stole all of Hannah's notes, leaving Hannah to think that nobody cared about her and her new cutted hair. Eventually Hannah caught him in his act and confronted him with tears in the middle of the hallway, making a fool out of herself. The notes which Zach stole is the only hope for Hannah to live, and Zach took it away. Hannah wrote an anonymous note to Mr. Porter, the teacher for Peer Communications, telling him to discuss about the subject 'suicide'. In the next class, they discussed about it but it didn't help much. The students weren't supporting yet were saying mean things about the person who wanted to commit suicide.
The eighth is Ryan. He's the editor of the Lost n Found column in the school newspaper. He stole Hannah's poem after poetry class and puts in his column saying "Soul Alone". Some mocked Hannah when they found out she wrote that poem. It made Hannah feel that her thoughts aren't safe either.
Clay is the ninth.Hannah said that he was the nicest person has ever met. She never heard anybody saying anything bad about him. So one night at a party they finally talk after years of knowing each other. They end up talking for hours then going into a room where they kissed. But then Hannah got scared that Clay might betray her so she shouted at him; telling him to leave her alone. Clay tried to calm her down but then he finally left. Hannah cried on the floor beside the bed.
Here is where Justin appears again. Hannah heard some noises outside and turns out it was Justin and another guy. The guy said that "it would only be 10 mins, promise." Then the door opened as three figures stood by the door. It was the guy and drunk Jessica. Hannah quickly crawled into the wardrobe and sat in there, shivering in fear. Jessica was getting raped while she and Justin didn't do a thing to stop it. Hannah cried while covering her ears in the pile of jackets inside the wardrobe.
Number eleven is Jenny the Cheerleader. She gave Hannah a ride home since she's in bad condition. On the way home, Jenny accidentally hit something. It was a stop sign. "Just a stop sign" Jenny thought. At the moment, Hannah was thinking of snatching Jenny's phone and called the police. She wanted to report that Jenny hit the stop sign. But Jenny was furious about it and so Hannah walked home. On the same night, an accident happened. it involves a senior who was in a rush to deliver his pizza and an old man driving to his granddaughter's place to deliver her toothbrush. The old man lives, the senior doesn't. Hannah felt really bad about herself and thought that if she reported about the stop sign earlier, there would be no death.
Bryce is number twelve. As Hannah was depressed and thinking of ways to kill herself, she joined in the hot tube with Bryce and Courtney. Bryce touched her and at that moment, Hannah felt hopeless. Hannah found the best way to die. She's going to do it.
The final reason. Number thirteen. Mr. Porter. He's the Peer Communication teacher and a counselor. Hannah recorded their conversation of her giving hints that she's going to do it. Mr. Porter didn't quite get the message. Hannah got up and left. Her last words were "Thank You".
She went home. She placed the final tape in the shoe box and mailed it to the first person on the list, Justin. She chugged up the whole bottle of pills and waited for her time to come.
